Our History
It was just after World War II that Irvin & Wilma Maddox were operating a successful restaurant on Harrison Blvd in Ogden called the Double J Steakhouse. Living in Brigham City and commuting daily, Irv and Wilma eyed a piece of property next to the highway and thought it might be a good location for a Cafe. If it wasn’t, the small restaurant was built on “skids,” so it could be towed away and attempted again elsewhere. They opened in August 1949, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Irv had a saying and guiding principle. He put it on his business cards, printed it on menus, and even painted it on the building, “The Best is None Too Good.” Irv’s principle applied not only to ingredients but also to the treatment of our customers. Many family members and key employees used Irv’s principle as a guide through their successful
lifelong careers.
I‘m so grateful I was able to work with my father, Steve(2nd generation owner). He would tell his vendors that he only wanted their best stuff and to sell the rest to somebody else. Dad was committed to giving his best to the Maddox employees, and he developed a reputation for being a kind and generous boss and employer. Today, I get to work with my sons, the 4th generation. I’ve had many Maddox
teachers who have led by successful examples. Though I still have lots to learn, I know one thing: Grandpa was right!
